Puerto Rico Day - Tallahassee 2017
This past week nearly a dozen community partners from across the state rallied together and organized an advocacy day on behalf of the over one million Floridians who self-identify as Puerto Rican. This year's Puerto Rico Day brought together local advocacy leaders, state policymakers, and Florida rich and beautiful Puerto Rican community to engage in cultural activities, learning opportunities, and a chance to engage with lawmakers to speak on the fiscal crisis in Puerto Rico, which continues to drive migration out of the island and into the States.
To kick-off the event, three of Central Florida's inspirational community leaders were honored at the Hispanic Federation's sponsored Celebrando Nuestra Fuerza: LGBTQ Reception for their contributions to the local LGBTQ+ Latinx community. Representative Carlos Guillermo Smith was honored with the Trailblazer Award, Nancy Rosado with the Social Justice Award, and Angel Santiago, Jr. with the Nuestro Orgullo Award.
On Wednesday, April 26th a series of panel discussions and workshops were held at the State Capitol to education constituents and State representatives on the needs of the Puerto Rican community.
