Julia Desangles Batlle is originally from Santiago, Dominican Republic, and spent most of her upbringing in South Florida with her parents and 2 older sisters. As an immigrant, Julia grew up recognizing the cultural differences between her family and the dominant White American culture. From that experience, she has been able to approach her organizing work and relationships with compassion.

She graduated from the New College of Florida in 2015 where she majored in Sociology with a focus on Gender Studies. She worked as the Regional Organizer for Planned Parenthood of Southwest & Central Florida for almost 2 years until she accepted a position as a Raiz Organizer for Planned Parenthood. In that time, Julia has worked to grow awareness of Planned Parenthood in Central FL as well as normalize conversations about our bodies. Abortion and STI stigma, in particular, have been at the core of Julia’s outreach + engagement in Central Florida.

Currently, Julia is leading the Latinx-centered work here in Central Florida and is specifically focusing on work around stigma and sexual health in the community. As a Latinx person who has had an abortion, Julia understands the individual, interpersonal, cultural and institutional harm stigma can cause. This connection to the work and her life motivates her to do more for her comunidad. Julia feels privileged to build power, genuine relationships, and trust with organizers and passionate advocates in the Central Florida region.
